Patrick Mahomes’ legs an early factor in Super Bowl LV

Both offenses are struggling to sustain any movement with the football, but if there is a factor in the early going of Super Bowl LV, it is not the right arm of Patrick Mahomes, but his legs.

On the Kansas City Chiefs’ first possession of the game, the Kansas City quarterback picked up a first down, moving the chains on this 3rd and 7:

This play is a prime example of one of the secondary concerns when you play man coverage against the Chiefs. Not only do you have to worry about the receivers downfield, but when you turn your backs to Mahomes, he can take advantage of the green grass downfield.

Then on the Chiefs’ second possession, Mahomes again moved the chains with his legs:

On this play, Andy Reid gave the Chiefs’ offensive line a bit of help, keeping both Travis Kelce and Sammy Watkins in to block defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul, while moving Mahomes out of the pocket by design.

The Chiefs have just a three-point lead, but the legs from Patrick Mahomes are already a difference in this game.
