Patrick Mahomes discusses ‘smooth transition’ from Eric Bieniemy to Matt Nagy

The Kansas City Chiefs turned back the clocks following the 2023 NFL offseason, promoting Matt Nagy from quarterbacks coach to offensive coordinator once again.

Nagy spent five seasons as the Chiefs’ quarterbacks coach from 2013-15 before being promoted to co-offensive coordinator with Brad Childress in 2016. He became the sole offensive coordinator during Alex Smith’s best season back in 2017 before moving on to become head coach of the Chicago Beras in 2018.

Speaking to reporters last week, Patrick Mahomes explained that the transition from Eric Bieniemy back to Nagy has been a smooth one for him.

“It’s been easy, I think for me, just because I was here when he was the OC the first time,” Mahomes said. “Obviously, (former Chiefs Offensive Coordinator Eric Bieniemy) EB will be missed. I mean the way he was able to take us and lead us to be the offense that we’ve had these last few years, so he’ll definitely be missed, but I’m glad it’s someone that I’m comfortable with, someone that I’ve worked with before. I think the guys are starting to learn how he wants things done. Even though (it’s) the same system, it’s obviously a little bit different on the guys and the coach and stuff like that. It has been a smooth transition so far and now it’s about kind of continuing to build and build until the season.”

The only offensive players who remain from Nagy’s prior tenure as offensive coordinator are Mahomes and Travis Kelce. It’ll be up to them to help bring the rest of the members of the offense up to speed with the ways that Nagy likes things done.
