CHICAGO _ It felt like a playoff game and hurt like a playoff loss.
The Blackhawks outshot the Avalanche 44-31, but J.T. Compher's second goal of the game with 5 minutes, 22 seconds left in the third period lifted the Avalanche to a 5-3 victory over the Hawks on Friday night at the United Center.
The loss dropped the Hawks three points out of the final Western Conference wild-card spot after the Wild beat the Red Wings, 5-3.
The Hawks got a power play with 1:43 remaining but didn't beat Semyon Varlamov during a mad scramble in front of the net. The Avs' Carl Soderberg scored an empty-net goal with 34 seconds remaining.
Alex DeBrincat scored his 34th goal to tie the score 3-3 on a power play with 10 minutes remaining. DeBrincat's goal came a few minutes after Gabriel Landeskog had given the Avalanche a 3-2 lead.
Patrick Kane's 39th goal in the second period extended his point streak to 20 games, making him the seventh player in NHL history with two career point streaks of at least 20 games. He had a 26-game streak during the 2015-16 season.
The Hawks outshot the Avs 16-11 in the first period but ended it trailing 1-0. A couple of minutes after Dylan Strome hit the post on an open net, Soderberg burst past Erik Gustafsson and sent a wrist shot through Collin Delia's legs.
Strome redeemed himself midway through the second, on the Hawks' first power play. Gustafsson's slap shot caromed off the back board, and Strome was there to whack it past Varlamov for his 16th goal.
Compher put the Avalanche back up on a power-play goal, but 1:26 later the Hawks tied it on Kane's tally.
The Hawks lost a forward to an early injury for the second straight game. Marcus Kruger took a slap shot off the leg in the first period and left the game after taking his first shift of the second.
