Patrick Kane woke up Tuesday $5,000 lighter in the wallet.
The NHL announced the Blackhawks forward was fined the maximum allowed under the collective bargaining agreement for slashing Ducks forward Nick Ritchie during the third period of the Hawks' 7-3 victory Monday at the United Center.
Ritchie slashed Kane in the left leg as the two were headed toward their respective benches. Kane retaliated with a two-handed swing of his stick aimed at Ritchie's leg. Both received minor penalties.
Blackhawks coach Joel Quenneville said he wasn't aware of Kane's punishment before Tuesday night's game against the Predators.
"I didn't hear about that," Quenneville said. "Now that I know about it I'll look into it a little more and see what happened."
Ritchie, whom the league didn't discipline, was suspended for two games in April for a punch that fractured bones in Blackhawks defenseman Michal Rozsival's face. The broken bones required surgery and Rozsival hasn't played since.
