Patrick Dempsey's Malibu spread goes for $500,000 over the asking price

June 11--Malibu's Tin House hasn't lost its shine, apparently. Actor Patrick Dempsey on Wednesday sold the Frank Gehry-designed compound for $15 million -- $500,000 over the asking price.

Set behind wooden gates on 3.2 mountainside acres, the bucolic setting centers on a Modern-style house clad in corrugated metal that was built for abstract painter Ron Davis in the 1970s.

Two levels of light-filled living feature high ceilings, skylights, wood-beamed ceilings and angular walls of glass throughout. Within the 5,547 square feet of space is a second-story family room, an office, three bedrooms and 3.5 bathrooms.

Outdoors, the park-like grounds include such amenities as a rock-climbing wall, an open-air kitchen, animal coops and hutches and a four-stall barn. Set off of the house, a swimming pool and an L-shaped spa sit level with a wood-plank deck.

Elsewhere on the grounds, a vintage Airstream doubles as a guest house.

Dempsey, 49, has spent the last decade playing the part of surgeon Derek Shepherd on the series "Grey's Anatomy." He's also dabbles in auto racing and races competitively for Dempsey Racing, which he founded in 2006.

He bought the house with his wife Jillian, who filed for divorce in January, in 2009 for $7 million.

Brett Lawyer of Hilton Hyland, an affiliate of Christie's International Real Estate, and Christopher Cortazzo of Coldwell Banker are the listing agents. Ladd Jackson, also of Hilton Hyland, represented the buyer in the sale.
