Patrick Bamford's omission from the England squad has been placed under the spotlight once again.
The England boss opted against calling the Leeds United striker into his Three Lions squad, despite netting 17 Premier League goals last season.
Instead, Ollie Watkins was prefered in the extended 33-man party, though he was eventually cut for the final Euro 2020 squad a week later.
Harry Kane's struggles in the opening two matches have only intensified the feeling amongst Leeds fans that Bamford should have been handed an opportunity to impress.
Of course, Kane is England's captain, a world-class striker and understandably their number one in that position.
However, constant refusal to offer Bamford an opportunity, in the same way that Watkins and other members of the squad have, is what wrangles with those that reside at Elland Road.
England supporters have been mystified as to why Southgate has continually ignored Jack Grealish from the starting XI too, despite his team's apparent struggles to create chances from open play.
Southgate and Grealish have different views on his best role for England, with the Aston Villa captain widely occupying a wide-left role last season, though he's given license to roam.
The England boss does not see Grealish as a direct comparison to Marcus Rashford, Raheem Sterling or Jadon Sancho, who are more direct, traditional wingers.
Instead, Grealish's biggest competition is Mason Mount, as any hopes of a starting berth seem to rely on him proving himself as England's best number 10.
A report from The Athletic claims Southgate holds reservations over Grealish's work rate and ability to press from an advanced midfield role, as Mount does so effectively.
They state that senior members of the England camp believe this is why he Grealish isn't in the starting XI.
Given Bamford's incredible energy levels and pressing numbers for Marcelo Bielsa, this only makes his omission all the more confusing.
