Patrick Bamford set to renew rivalry with Millwall midfielder following 2015 Twitter controversy

Patrick Bamford will come up against a Millwall player who was slapped with a two-match ban after insulting him on Twitter when the Lions visit Elland Road on Saturday.

Back in 2015, Ryan Tunnicliffe, who played for Fulham at the time, was hit with a punishment from the FA after sending a derogatory tweet to Bamford .

The former Manchester United player took to Twitter after Bamford’s club at the time, Middlesbrough, lost in the Championship Play-Off Final to Norwich City.

In a tweet which has since been deleted, Tunnicliffe said: “Happy that Middlesbrough didn’t go up, just for the main fact that @Patrick_Bamford is a sausage boy.”

He was charged with ‘aggravated misconduct by reference to sexual orientation' which he admitted. His ban saw him miss the first two games of Fulham’s 2015/16 season and he was also hit with a £5,000 fine and ordered to attend an education course.

Tunnicliffe and Bamford have only met a couple of times in the four years since the incident, and have only faced up against each other in opposing starting line-ups on one previous occasion.

It adds another layer to what is already set to be a feisty clash. Millwall manager Neil Harris has already described it as ‘the biggest game of the season by far’ and former Leeds striker Steve Morison has lashed out at current head coach Marcelo Bielsa.

The last time the two teams met, they played out a 1-1 draw at The Den in September when Jack Harrison opened his Leeds account by scoring an 89th-minute equaliser, calling out Jed Wallace’s goal on 55 minutes.

After the match, Harris referred to Bielsa and his team’s reaction to the goal as ‘a disgrace in English football’.

Millwall head into the clash in 20th position in the Championship with just one point separating them from the teams in the relegation zone.
