Patrick Bamford is called up to the England squad and joins Kalvin Phillips

Patrick Bamford has been called up to the England squad for the first time and joins Kalvin Phillips for the forthcoming international break.

It is the first time Leeds United will have two players in a Three Lions squad since March 2004 and caps what has been a stellar 12 months for the Elland Road number nine.

The calls for him to make it into Gareth Southgate's initial Euro 2020 squad were deafening in the final weeks of last season, when he added the last of his 17 Premier League goals.

Harry Kane was the only Englishman to score more than Bamford in the top flight last term and the latter played for one of only three newly-promoted sides in the division.

Bamford's rise was so impressive through 2020/21, he scored one more goal in the top division than he did in more games against inferior defences one season earlier.

The announcement caps a superb week for the 27-year-old, who signed a new five-year contract at Elland Road seven days ago.

For Phillips, after a stellar Euro 2020, the international matches next month against Hungary, Andorra and Poland, provide a chance to add to his 15 caps.

Full England squad: Sam Johnstone, Nick Pope, Jordan Pickford; Trent Alexander-Arnold, Conor Coady, Reece James, Harry Maguire, Tyrone Mings, Luke Shaw, Kieran Trippier, John Stones, Kyle Walker; Jude Bellingham, Jordan Henderson, Jesse Lingard, Mason Mount, Kalvin Phillips, Declan Rice; Patrick Bamford, Dominic Calvert-Lewin, Jack Grealish, Harry Kane, Bukayo Saka, Raheem Sterling.
