Patrice Evra 'surprised' by Willian after Arsenal transfer

Former Manchester United defender Patrice Evra has revealed his shock with how Willian has started his Arsenal career, but has backed him to come good eventually.

Willian joined the Gunners on a free transfer after his contract expired at London rivals Chelsea in the summer.

The 32-year-old wanted to stay at Stamford Bridge, according to reports, but the Blues were only prepared to offer him a two-year deal, whilst the Brazilian winger wanted a three-year contract.

That's exactly what Mikel Arteta and Arsenal handed the experienced attacker, and despite being very impressive on his competitive debut against Fulham, he's found it difficult to adapt to life in north London.

Willian has come under fire recently with the club's supporters for some of his performances, and Evra has admitted he is shocked by his start to life with Arteta's side.

“I’m surprised because I understand at Chelsea he had a difficult time with Mourinho, but what a talented player, what a wonderful player to watch," Evra said in the Sky Sports studio.

"I’m surprised because playing for Arsenal, you don’t have that kind of pressure.

"I understand why Arsenal fans criticise him but he can do much better than that, he surely will.

"Maybe you have to adapt to a new team, I don’t want to find any excuses but I’m behind Willian and he will do much better than what he is doing right now.”

With well over 200 appearances to his name in the English top-flight, the ex-Chelsea man has the experience to overcome such adversity.

However, according to Spanish outlet La Razon, Real Betis are planning a move for Willian in the near future.

Evra's prediction regarding Willian may not even have time to become true if the Brazilian leaves England in one of the upcoming transfer windows.
