Patrice Evra says he's been "betrayed" by Ed Woodward as he opens up on relationship

Patrice Evra has confessed he felt "betrayed" by Ed Woodward as he opens up on his Manchester United exit.

The Frenchman won almost every honour there was to win during eight years at Old Trafford including the Champions League in 2008.

But following Sir Alex Ferguson's retirement Evra was forced to seek pastures new and opted for a move to Italian champions Juventus.

He had been keen to extend his stay in Manchester given his affection for the club and only received an offer from Woodward once it was too late.

Evra told The Guardian : "I felt betrayed by Ed. I called Juventus to tell them I am coming.

"Ed then said: 'We offer you a two-year contract, more money, the captaincy, a testimonial.'

"Too late [to renege on his agreement with Juventus]. [In June 2015] my ex-wife said: 'See? Manchester are nearly in the Championship and you're in [the Champions League final].'

"I love Juventus but I said: 'Even if they're in the Championship, I prefer to be at United. Nothing can replace my love for them.'"

The right-back would go on to reach his fourth European Cup Final in his first year in Turin.

He won consecutive Serie A titles and Coppa Italias but reflects on the downward spiral he witnessed at Old Trafford.

In his final year at the club they finished seventh - their lowest ever Premier League position - and Evra admits David Moyes was attempting "mission impossible"

“When Ferguson left, United lost their DNA, their philosophy," he added.

"He was inspiring so much respect, so much fear, and if any player starts thinking he is bigger than the team then he destroyed you. The players always wanted to play for Ferguson.

"I tried my best for David Moyes but I knew it would be a disaster because players won’t respect him like that. It was a mission impossible.”
