Patrice Evra says Harry Maguire decision shows why Manchester United won't win trophies this season

Former Manchester United defender Patrice Evra said he doesn't think his old club is capable of winning trophies because there are no leaders in the squad.

United tackle Jose Mourinho's Tottenham on Saturday afternoon, having endured a slow start to the Premier League season after defeat against Crystal Palace and an unconvincing win over Brighton.

United have also come under scrutiny for their lack of activity in the transfer market, with Jadon Sancho looking increasingly likely to stay at Borussia Dortmund despite United having earmarked the 20-year-old as their top target some time ago.

Evra is feeling pessimistic about United's trophy-winning prospects and pointed to the club's decision to make Harry Maguire captain earlier this year as one of the reasons why he doesn't think they are capable of challenging for honours.

“No," Evra told Sky Sports when asked if United can win any trophies this season. "Even the captain, Maguire, how many years is he in Manchester? One. He’s the captain. This club doesn’t have any leaders to win trophies.”
