Patrice Evra 'perplexed' with response to Ralf Rangnick appointment as Manchester United

Patrice Evra admits he’s “perplexed” by the response to Ralf Rangnick’s appointment as Manchester United interim boss, and feels the focus should be on the club’s players.

Rangnick was confirmed as United’s new interim manager earlier this week, and will take charge for the remainder of the season before moving into a consultancy role.

His arrival comes after Ole Gunnar Solskjaer paid the price for a dismal run of results and performances, with United’s hopes of challenging for the Premier League title ending almost as quickly as they begun.

The arrival of Rangnick has renewed some hope among supporters though, with the German having been a major figure in Germany over the years, with the likes of Jurgen Klopp and Thomas Tuchel citing him as an influence.

Former United defender Evra, though, admits he can’t get excited about the club appointing another manager, having struggled to recapture their standing since Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement in 2013.

Asked for his reaction to Rangnick’s appointment, Evra told Amazon Prime Video: “Perplexed.

“We are talking more about Rangnick than what the players are doing on the pitch because we just sacked a manager but everyone seems so excited and, ‘Rangnick is going to be a genius’.

“He has my full support but let’s see. I want the players to give a response on the pitch because when a manager has been sacked the players have to take some responsibility. All the United fans are excited about Rangnick.

“I’m bemused. I can’t be excited when we sack a manager. I feel like every season is a Deja Vu. So, we’ll see. I’ve got hope, I will stay positive but no not excited.”
