Patna Science College students involved in ragging served notices

PATNA: The anti-ragging committee of Patna Science College on Friday served show-cause notices to all the BSc 2nd year students allegedly involved in the ragging of a first year mathematics honours student of the college. The students residing illegally in the Faraday House hostel of the college have also been asked to vacate their rooms immediately.

It was decided at a meeting of the college anti-ragging committee convened by college principal S R Padmadeo. All the 2nd year students residing in the hostel were asked to explain within 24 hours as to why stern action should not be initiated against them. It was decided to first identify the real accused before pronouncing any punishment. A written statement narrating details of the incident occurring on the February 15 night was also procured by the committee.

The matter of ragging with a first year student, who was allotted Faraday House, came to the knowledge of the college administration only after the receipt of a letter to this effect written by the anti-ragging cell of the UGC, which asked the college principal to get the entire matter properly inquired into and report back the findings.

According to the complaint lodged with the UGC cell, five to six 2nd year students of the college residing in the hostel asked the complainant to dance and, when he refused to do so, assaulted him. Getting scared after the incident, the boy left the hostel and went to his parents.

The principal told this newspaper that some 2nd year students continued to illegally occupy the rooms allotted to them in the first year as the college had not made fresh allotment in the 2nd year. Since the newly admitted students have been made fresh allotment of rooms, they are facing difficulties in occupying the rooms earmarked for them. The hostel superintendent has been asked to take stern action against the students who are overstaying in the hostel. He said after the inquiry, stern action would be taken against the students who are found involved in the student’s ragging.

Patna University has also taken cognizance of the matter and kept an eye on the development following the incident. Necessary action as per law would be taken against the accused, said PU students’ welfare Anil Kumar.
