PATNA: An assistant sub-inspector of police Devendra Kumar Yadav (58) suffering from depression allegedly committed suicide inside his rented accommodation at Dhobi tola in Mandiri under Buddha colony police station area of state capital.
Yadav was a native of Nawtolia under Kasim Bazaar police station in Munger and was posted at Gandhi Maidan police station in Patna from 2019.
The matter came to light after a foul smell started emanating from his room which alerted Yadav’s house owner and neighbours on Friday morning after which they immediately informed police.
Buddha colony police station SHO (in-charge) Durgesh Gahlot said that Yadav was found hanging from a rope which was tied with a hook in the roof.
“Police had to first break the iron grill locked from inside. Then the wooden door was dislodged to gain entry inside the room,” he said.
Gahlot said that Yadav’s one of the five daughters who lived with him, had gone somewhere and he was alone for at least ten days at least.
“Yadav was on duty till morning of July 14. Afterwards, he was never seen and could not be contacted. It seems Yadav had committed suicide same day,” SHO said.
Quoting neighbours, he said that Yadav continuously used to live in depression and didn’t ever interact with anyone.
“Reasons behind it were not clear. No suicide note has been recovered. His son-in-law, a police constable, alleged about not being granted leave but family members have not mentioned anything about it in the written application to police,” he said.
Gahlot said that Yadav's body has been handed over to family after post-mortem. “He had five daughters and a son. Two daughters are married. One of the daughters is also a police constable. Son is unemployed,” he added.
