Patna: CBI arrests CGM, DGM of NHAI in bribery case; Rs 76 lakh cash, jewellery worth Rs 80 lakh recovered in searches

PATNA: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Friday arrested a chief general manager (CGM) of the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) — currently posted at its regional office in Bihar capital Patna — on the charges of accepting Rs 5 lakh along with two employees of a private company (including bribe giver) in an alleged case of bribery.

“Cash approximately Rs 70 lakh and documents related to various properties were also found from the premises of the CGM Sadre Alam during subsequent searches at altogether eight different locations in Patna and a few other places. Cash of approximately Rs 6 lakh and jewellery worth about Rs 80 lakh including gold biscuits, ornaments were recovered from the premises of the deputy general manager (DGM), NHAI, Prabhanshu Shekhar, currently posted at regional office, Patna,” a senior official of the CBI told TOI on Friday.

Later, the DGM Prabhanshu was also arrested in the case, the CBI officer said.

“A case was registered against the CGM, NHAI, Patna and others including the DGM, NHAI, Patna, a Nashik based private company and its general manager, its three employees,” the CBI official said.

A CBI team reached the NHAI regional office and premises of its two senior officers after the central investigating agency received a complaint that public servants of NHAI were demanding bribes from the officials of a private company based at Nashik for favour in clearing inflated bills, manipulation of measurement books etc.

Besides the CGM and the DGM, two employees of Messrs Ashoka Buildcon Limited — Amit Kumar Gupta and Mukul Kumar — were also arrested on the charges of giving bribes to the NHAI CGM.

“All the four arrested accused persons would be produced before the competent court after necessary questioning,” the CBI officer said, adding, “The incriminating documents recovered during searches are being scrutinized.”
