Patients stricken with delays after blocked drain floods Glasgow hospital

Patients faced delays yesterday after water began seeping through the floor at Scotland’s showpiece hospital.

A blocked drain caused the problem in an outpatient waiting area in the orthopaedic department at the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital in Glasgow.

Some appointments were delayed as patients were directed to another area. Those who couldn’t wait had to have their appointments rescheduled.

One patient said: “I was in for a follow-up appointment and the reception area in orthopaedic was closed off and we were taken to another area to wait. There were about 50 of us.

“Then we were trekked round the houses, up and down corridors, to another area.”

A spokeswoman for Greater Glasgow and Clyde health board apologised for the inconvenience.

She said: “A blocked drain caused some water to leak into a clinic area on the ground floor.

“Additional space was found in another area to allow the clinic to continue.

“Every effort was made to minimise delays and additional consultants were brought in to ensure the smooth running of the clinic.”
