Patients report 13-hour wait for A&E at North Manchester hospital amid claims people were queuing up outside

Patients arriving at North Manchester Hospital claimed they faced a 13-hour wait to be seen at A&E.

One man, who attended the hospital in Crumpsall with his wife on Friday morning (July 2), said the area was 'packed' and that he had to queue just to get into reception.

A picture sent to the M.E.N appears to shows a whiteboard in the waiting room of accident and emergency which states the 'approximate' wait time was 13 and a half hours.

The board read Friday's date - July 2, 2021.

Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust, who run the hospital, confirmed they and other healthcare providers across the city are "currently experiencing high levels of demands."

The man, who asked to remain anonymous, said he arrived at the hospital with his wife at around 10am on Friday morning, after she was instructed to do so by her GP.

She was diagnosed with pneumonia six weeks ago and presented at A+E today with respiratory issues.

"Having seen the GP we were told they would call ahead to the hospital and that we should make our way to A&E," her husband said.

"When we arrived it was packed. There was a queue outside just to get into reception.

"They were trying to tell people to come in on their own but that was pretty much ignored by most people.

"The board here said it's been a 13 hour wait since we got there, it didn't changed."

The man said his wife was eventually called in at around 3pm on Friday, but that people arriving at the hospital were still being informed of a 13-hour plus wait time.

"I watched one woman in her 80s come in who had been told by her GP she would be seen straight away only for her to be told there was a wait of up to 13 hours," he said.

"My wife was in hospital six weeks ago with pneumonia and we are here today for respiratory problems so it’s quite serious.

"When I saw the board and it said 13 hours I rang the doctor and asked if there was anything they could do to get us seen quicker."

The man said he was prepared to start phoning every hospital between Manchester and Birmingham if his wife wasn't seen by the end of the day.

"I don’t know what has gone wrong here but something has gone drastically wrong when it comes to 13 hours," he said.

"There are around 17 or 18 people in here at the moment. It is a very small waiting room and people are doing their best to social distance.

"Fortunately when I arrived I went straight and got my wife a wheelchair. Some people have to stand up whilst they wait.

"I don’t doubt these nurses and doctors are doing an amazing job and it is not a dig at them but something has gone very wrong here."

Earlier this month, patients attending A&E at Manchester Royal Infirmary were faced with queues of around ten hours, the M.E.N understands.

Another night saw A&E patients waiting for up to eight hours.

Hospital bosses said some patients were unable to enter the triage waiting room due to a ‘significantly higher than usual number of patients’ attending the MRI Emergency Department.

This resulted in similar queues outside the department, they said.

A spokesperson for Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust, said: "Along with other healthcare providers, we are currently experiencing high levels of demand for our service, including in our Emergency Department at North Manchester General Hospital.

"Our staff are focussed on providing safe care to all of our patients and we have robust processes in place to help us manage any increases in demand."
