Patients forced to travel 40 miles as all Bristol pharmacies close

Patients have been forced to make  a 40-mile round trip to pick up important medicines this evening after every pharmacy in Bristol closed.

Boots in Avon Meads Retail Park was the only scheduled pharmacy to be open this Bank Holiday Monday evening.

But the venue has mysteriously shut with bosses leaving no note on the door to explain.

Now residents are being forced to travel to Weston to pick up their prescriptions.

One patient, who wished not to be named, said she travelled from Filton to St Phillips because she was in a lot of pain with tonsillitis.

She rang ahead to make sure the pharmacy was open as advertised and began to worry when no one answered the phone.

The mum of two then called 111 to see if anywhere would serve her but the call handler assured her it would be open.

Almost 20 minutes later, she arrived at the retail park only to find it was locked up and no one was inside.

"I called 111 back and they said my nearest place would be Weston.

"I don't have a car and my dad doesn't travel on motorways so there was no way I could get there.

"I waited outside for around 15 minutes during that time at least 20 people came to try and get their prescriptions. One woman was really worried because she needed medication for her elderly mum.

"I feel really annoyed that not one place was open tonight."

Online it shows most other pharmacies in Bristol closed their doors  between 5pm to 6pm. Boots Avon Meads was supposed to remain open until 11.59pm.

When Bristol Live went down to investigate we found the shutters of the building were down and all the lights were off.

No one was available for comment.

Pharmacies are intended to remain open for as many hours as possible to take the pressure off NHS centres including hospitals.
