Patients evacuated and staff escorted by police following taxi explosion

Women were evacuated and moved to other hospitals following a taxi explosion that left one dead.

Emergency services were called to the Liverpool Women's Hospital at 10.59am today, Sunday, November 14, after reports of a car on fire.

Merseyside Police have since confirmed one person was killed and another injured when flames engulfed a taxi outside the entrance.

Counter Terrorism Police are now leading the investigation supported by Merseyside Police, however it has not been declared a terror incident at this stage.

Liverpool Women's remains cordoned off by emergency services and it is closed to all visitors.

Chief executive at the Liverpool Women's Kathryn Thomson said today: "I would like to provide some assurance about the actions we are taking as a trust to keep our hospitals safe alongside Merseyside police.

"We have restricted visiting to the hospital with immediate effect until further notice.

"Where possible we have diverted patients to other hospitals until further notice.

"We are currently allowing ambulances to access the hospital in emergencies.

"We are reviewing patent activity for the next 24 to 48 hours and patients should wait to be contacted for updates about any planned appointments.

"Our staff is being permitted to leave and to enter the hospital under the supervision of Merseyside Police.

"I would like to say think you to patients, visitors and staff who have been impacted by this incident., in particular those staff who were at the scene at the time of the incident.

"We will be assuring that everyone affected by this will be supported."

Many have expressed their thoughts for all the women, babies and families who will have been at the Women's today.

Kay Morrison said on our Facebook page: "Thinking of new mums and babies."

Julie Richardson said: "Thinking of everyone who has been affected by the horrible events unfolding here x"

And Susan Suze Seddon added: "Thinking of the new mums and babies. What happened today must have been terrifying."
