Patients had to be diverted away from their local hospital after it reached capacity.

Hairmyres Hospital in East Kilbride, which is opening a , was unable to cope with demand on Wednesday.

A hospital insider said: “All but 999 calls had to be diverted to other hospitals because Hairmyres was full.”

Labour’s health spokeswoman Monica Lennon called the news “concerning”, adding: “Patients and staff have had enough of sticking-plaster solutions.

“Nicola Sturgeon and Jeane Freeman must properly resource health and social care services.”

Russell Coulthard, director of hospital services at Hairmyres, said: “We have at all times continued to accept patients.

“When we experience an exceptionally high rate of emergency admissions, we work as a clinical network to divert some GP pre-assessed patients to another NHS Lanarkshire hospital where it is clinically appropriate to do so.”
