Patient who was refused cigarette used pool cue to smash up hospital office

A man seeking medical help for his mental health trashed a hospital office when refused a cigarette.

Alexander Tierney was a voluntary attender at Callington Road Hospital, Bristol.

But when he was told smoking was not permitted he became aggressive and used used a pool cue to smash property, causing just under £3,000 of damage.

Tierney, 38, of no fixed address, was to face trial last month.

But on the day he pleaded guilty to affray and causing criminal damage on May 8.

The Recorder of Bristol His Honour Judge Peter Blair QC handed him a two-year community order, involving a mental health treatment requirement.

He told Tierney: "It is essential for you to be safe and for other people to be safe that this level of assessment is carried out."

James Haskell, prosecuting, said when Tierney trespassed into an office and was told he couldn't smoke he picked up a computer printer and threw it on the floor.

Mr Haskell said: "Staff, obviously frightened for their own safety, managed to get out and lock the door.

"He continued to cause damage inside to electrical equipment.

"He knocked over filing cabinets, picked up a pool cue and smashed the glass panel in the office door so it cracked."

The court heard Tierney managed to get out of the office and then sat with another patient as if nothing had happened.

But he picked up a pool cue again, frightening staff, and police called in arrested him.

The repair bill for the trashed office was £2,819.99.

Tierney's previous convictions including a serious assault on his mother, the court heard.

Emma Martin, defending, said her client's mother would be able to find her son temporary accommodation before an organized care package starts on December 9.
