Patient removed from hospital after swearing and abusing staff members

A patient had to be physically removed from a hospital by police and security after drunkenly swearing at staff.

Matthew Campbell, 30, was being treated at the Royal Gwent Hospital in Newport on July 17 after being assaulted the night before.

But police were called to the hospital's Accident and Emergency department after Campbell repeatedly swore at those who were treating him while heavily intoxicated.

An officer attended the hospital and Campbell began swearing at her when she walked into the department.

A sentencing hearing at Newport Crown Court on Friday heard that Campbell's "boorish behaviour", which included the words f*** and b*******, took place in front of elderly people and children who were also being treated at the hospital.

The defendant initially calmed down after being spoken to by the officer and she left with a colleague.

But as the officer was speaking to hospital staff outside the A&E department, she saw Campbell being removed by security staff and she went to assist.

She gave the defendant another warning and he was taken back inside the hospital to receive treatment for a cut on his foot.

However, Campbell continued swearing at staff members which resulted in him being arrested, to which he replied: "Are you f****** serious?"

Prosecutor Melissa Jones said: "In front of vulnerable persons children, the elderly and staff, he conducted a lengthy disturbance while intoxicated with the defendant being under the influence of alcohol."

Campbell pleaded guilty to using threatening or abusive or insulting words or behaviour.

The court also heard he had previous convictions for public order offences and was currently serving a suspended sentenced for being drunk and disorderly.

Defence barrister Nigel Fryer said his client found himself in hospital after being assaulted and was suffering from concussion. He said he had little recollection of what happened at the hospital.

Sentencing, judge Jeremy Jenkins said: "Doctors and nurses and all hospital staff perform a vital task which all of us in society benefit from and they don't need drunken selfish like people like you affecting their vital work.

"Those receiving treatment in hospital did not want to hear or be part of your boorish behaviour.

"It's about time the people of the Royal Gwent have respite from your drunken behaviour."

Judge Jenkins activated the suspended sentence order which meant Campbell, of Power Street, Newport, was sentenced to a total of six months imprisonment.
