Patient, 16, dies with coronavirus as UK hospital deaths rise

A further 313 coronavirus patients' deaths have been confirmed today (February 8) - including a 16-year-old with underlying health conditions.

Today's death toll is the lowest Monday total of the year so far, and brings England's overall number of hospital fatalities to 76,080.

The South West saw a big drop in deaths today, recording six. This compares to 24 on Sunday, 38 on Saturday and 52 on Friday.

A total of 83 deaths were confirmed in the South East - the highest in the country.

Patients were aged between 16 and 108 years old. All except six (aged 49 to 81 years old) had known underlying health conditions.

Dates of deaths ranged from December 24, 2020 to February 7, 2021, with the majority being on or after February 3.

The number of deaths of patients with Covid-19 by region are as follows:

  • East of England - 47
  • London - 34
  • Midlands - 77
  • North East & Yorkshire - 43
  • North West - 23
  • South East – 83
  • South West - 6

Deaths in all settings across Bristol and its neighbouring areas are falling, with seven confirmed on Monday.

There's also been a significant drop in the number of deaths in Somerset, with one more fatality reported today. This compares to death tolls above 20 every day last week.

No deaths were recorded in Gloucestershire on February 8.
