Pathum Thani road subsidence leaves holes, cracks

PATHUM THANI: A section of a canal-side road in Thanyaburi district has subsided, leaving metre-deep holes and several cracks.

Local residents on Saturday complained that the subsidence occurred after the Royal Irrigation Department sent a backhoe to dredge Khlong 5 in tambon Bung Thor. A section of road more than 30 meters long began to sink and holes and cracks were found at several spots, they said.

Thawatchai Therdkiart, 66, said workers from the department dredged the canal last month. About five days ago, the water level in the canal fell, causing the road to develop some cracks and then subside.

The municipality has put up traffic cones and light signals along the damaged section to prevent accidents.

Mr Thawatchai said many motorists often used the route at night, increasing the risk of accidents. Local residents say they do not know when authorities will repair the damaged section.
