'Pathetic' - Confusion over Sky Sports' choice to televise Sunderland's trip to Southend United on final day of League One season

Sky Sports have announced they will show Sunderland's trip to Southend United on the final day of the League One season.

The Black Cats' defeat to Fleetwood Town last night means they have nothing to play for in the last game of the season, having missed out on automatic promotion but secured their place in the play-offs.

Southend, on the other hand, need at least a draw if they are to avoid relegation, due to the fact that two teams below them - Plymouth Argyle and Scunthorpe United - meet each other on the final game of the season.

Sunderland manager Jack Ross (Robbie Stephenson/JMP)

Yet with Barnsley and Luton Town still fighting for the title - and one of Plymouth or Scunthorpe guaranteed to go down - there has been some derision from fans over the decision to air the Black Cats.

Replying to the announcement on social media, fans could not believe the choice of game that Sky are showing.

Ross: Why not Plymouth v Scunny? Just because it’s Sunderland they have to choose that game it’s pathetic.

GH: Well done. Absolutely brilliant. What do you know about football? Answer, nothing. Put Luton v Oxford or Bristol Rovers v Barnsley on instead, there's a title to be won!

Michael Wunderle: Shocking choice quite frankly.

Odds dramatically cut on Bristol Rovers manager Graham Coughlan to be the next Plymouth Argyle manager

Dan: That's an awful choice. Southend against Sunderland is the worst of the lot.

Jonathan Gough: Why? Surely Plymouth v Scunthorpe has more riding on it. Just trying to get viewers as opposed to picking best match. Sunderland will prob rest players for play offs. Poor from Sky again.

Tom: Why? That is just a dreadful choice. I know Southend are fighting for survival but so are Plymouth and Scunthorpe in an absolute six-pointer if that's the route you're taking. Sunderland have nothing to play for. So many more apt games to pick.
