Patchway train station to close over Easter weekend for lift and bridge work

Disability campaigners have welcomed works to improve access at Patchway railway station but say there is still a long way to go until the rail network around Bristol is wheelchair friendly.

The station in South Gloucestershire will be closed over Easter weekend while work takes place to install lifts and a new footbridge.

For years people in wheelchairs have only been able to access one platform at the station but this will change once the new structure is complete.

According to Network Rail the deck of the new structure will be lifted into place this weekend, with the bridge due to be open for passengers by the summer.

For transport campaigner Dave Redgewell these changes can’t come soon enough.

“It’s brilliant that these changes are being put in place at Patchway station, it has been a long time coming,” he added.

“But I really wish that work to improve accessibility was taking place at a series of stations across the greater Bristol area to make disabled travel better.”

Mr Redgewell said that work to improve Stapleton Road would be the next project taking place in conjunction with Bristol City Council.

But that there were plenty of other stations across the region that still had access issues including Weston-super-Mare, Parson Street, and Nailsea and Backwell.

“I’m delighted about the work at Patchway but we still have a long way to go before we have a fully accessible railway system in the south west of England,” added Mr Redgewell.
