Patched-up Fabian Schar warns Newcastle United they must play with their 'heads' going into 2020

Fabian Schar has urged Newcastle United to learn their lessons in the Premier League after falling to defeat against Everton.

The Swiss international netted his sixth goal of the calendar year to become the Magpies' top scorer in 2019 overall.

But he insisted his strike was no consolation after Newcastle were beaten 2-1 by the Toffees.

Schar said: "The first 20 minutes were quite poor and we showed a reaction.

"We deserved more. We had good chances in both halves.

"We've equalised then lost our heads a little bit so that is something we have to work on.

"We're at 1-1 in the game and if we'd played with our heads we'd win so we have to learn."

Schar played through the pain barrier in the game with a bandage on his hand after an injury he picked up at Manchester United on Boxing Day.

Schar explained: "Martial or somebody stamped on my hand. It isn't broken so everything is OK."

Looking back on his goal against Everton, Schar went on: "I hit the ball quite well and it was a good flick from Andy.

"At that point I was really pleased to help the team.

"Now I am disappointed about the result. For me the goal isn't something that makes me happy, I only want to win and unfortunately we didn't do it."

The result left Newcastle in mid-table as they missed their chance to end 2019 in the top 10 of the Premier League.

When asked his views on the season so far, Schar reflected: "It's still OK.

"We have lost the last two of course and that's disappointing.

"If we'd got something against Everton in would be much better on the table.

"We don't have too much time to recover we must still work and look to get points."

Newcastle now look forward to 2020 with a big clash against Leicester City to see the year in, Schar, speaking to BBC Newcastle, added: "I don't want to speak too much about that game.

"They have been one of the best teams this season but now it's a new challenge."

"We always want to show something at home so we will try everything."
