Pat Spillane makes rare admission during emotional goodbye to the Sunday Game

Pat Spillane said an emotional goodbye to the Sunday Game after a 30 year stint with the flagship GAA programme today.

The Kerry legend became the game's best known pundit alongside Colm O'Rourke and Joe Brolly as they formed an infamous trio.

And Spillane will bow out from punditry duties and said goodbye to the show.

Speaking at the beginning of coverage, he said: "I haven't gone to the end of the road either, I've gone to a turn of the road and finished a chapter.

"Do you remember Dame Vera Lynn who had a song 'we'll meet again, don't know where and don't know when but I know we'll meet again some sunny day.'"

And Sean Cavanagh teased Spillane as he departs the show, saying he provided Ulster counties plenty of motivation throughout the years.

He said: "From the people in the north of the country we have to thank you for all the motivation you gave to us over the years.

"We loved to hate you but I think we're going to miss you so I think there's a compliment in there somewhere."

And Ciaran Whelan gifted Pat Spillane a signed Dublin jersey from the five-in-a-row winning team and Spillane was happy to admit they were a great football team.

The Kerry legend said: "That's a lovely gesture, that Dublin team they played football, they were brilliant."

And saying goodbye to the show, he was asked if he had a single moment he remembers more fondly than the rest.

"One moment? No. The ultimate in life is to get paid for your profession whether it be a soccer player or a singer. The next best thing in life is to be paid for talking about your hobby and talking about your passion and I've been privileged for 30 years to write about Gaelic Games and to talk about Gaelic Games in here with RTE.

"It's been a wonderful rollercoaster ride, there have been highs and lows and I thank RTE for sticking with me and for the Irish people to allow me in their sitting room every Sunday for the Championship but it has been a great time. "
