Pat Shurmur: ‘Handful of guys might get an opportunity’ after Giants’ Pro Day

The New York Giants were quite busy on Friday, hosting several dozen 2019 NFL Draft prospects in East Rutherford for a local Pro Day.

Each player went through routine on-field workouts, as well as interviews with coaches, assistants and other executives. It was a common gauntlet run by all prospects, but unlike those at university pro days, these prospects were all predominantly from smaller schools.

Of course, that doesn’t mean they stand no chance at reaching the professional level. In fact, Giants head coach Pat Shurmur came away quite impressed with several of them.

“We had a lot of good players come in and compete,” Giants coach Pat Shurmur told NJ Advance Media. “At the local Pro Days we can find players that are going to help us. I don’t think today was any different. There were a handful of guys who might get an opportunity.”

Finding a diamond in the rough wouldn’t exactly be new for the Giants, either. They’ve typically done well scouting talent at their local pro day, discovering players like Victor Cruz and Chris Hogan.

“There are a lot of (success) stories,” Shurmur said. “Last year we had Rob Martin, Sean Chandler and Grant Haley. Two famous ones were Victor Cruz and Chris Hogan, who was originally on the Giants roster.”

If the Giants can land a player like Martin or Chandler as an undrafted free agent, they can consider their pro day a success. If they can land a player like Cruz, then it was a clear home run.
