Pat Shurmur: Giants’ developing a team to be proud of

When Kyle Lauletta connected with Alonzo Russell on a last-second touchdown to give the New York Giants a comeback victory over the New England Patriots in the preseason finale, the team stormed the field and celebrated like they had just won the Super Bowl.

For some, the celebration was over-the-top for a meaningless exhibition game, but for others, it was a sign of just how tightly knit the Giants have become over the summer.

“We’re just a family, we have honestly just become a family. Everyone genuinely cares for the guy next to him and you can see that on the field the way that everyone has been playing this preseason and just the competitiveness we have had at camp,” tight end Evan Engram told reporters on Friday.

In recent years, the Giants have been held back by selfish players and coaches that were out of their element, but with adults now in charge and players buying in, the team has become something to be proud of.

“I feel like we are starting to develop the type of team we can all be proud of,” head coach Pat Shurmur also said on Friday.

This is all a good first step for the rebuilding Giants, but they’ll need to string together some regular season wins or risk falling back into old habits. The good news is that the positive vibes and family atmosphere is something that breeds winners.
