Pat McAllister looks to the future after parting company with Sport and Leisure Swifts

Pat McAllister says he will take a short break before deciding on his next move in football.

McAllister stepped down as manager of Sport and Leisure Swifts following the West Belfast club's final game of the season on Tuesday night.

It also followed their relegation from the Premier Intermediate League, which was confirmed last Saturday.

The club, which is set to rebrand as Belfast Celtic, are now weighing up their own options which could see them move into the Ulster Senior League.

McAllister - who spent the past five years with the Glen Road club - said he parted company on good terms, but claimed he had been "let down" by a number of his players during the season.

"At the end of the day the buck stops with me, and I have to accept responsibility," he said.

Belfast Celtic plans still in place as Sport and Leisure Swifts prepare for final game

"But too many players let the club down this season. There wasn't the effort and commitment needed for the club to succeed in the league. And without that dedication you are always going to fail.

"It was just unacceptable at times, and my overriding emotion is anger.

"At this level you need to put the work in at training and on match days, and there were too many instances when some players didn't turn up for training. You can't do that and expect to perform on the Saturday.

"You need players to stand up and be counted, and we didn't get that.

"I spoke to the players after our final game and I was honest with them. I told them how I felt and many of them accepted that they could have done more. So there is no animosity there.

"I came to the club five years ago to help out and try and keep them in the league. We managed that and I ended up staying on. I enjoyed it and made a lot of good friends here.

"I wish the club and everyone involved every success in the future. I am just looking to the future now."

McAllister added: "I will take a break and then see what happens. I certainly haven't been put off management or anything like that. If anything this has given me greater motivation to maybe prove a few people wrong.

"The club is going to change its name to Belfast Celtic and it has big plans, but I never got involved in that side of things. I just focused on the football.

"But all the best to them in the future."

As for the future, McAllister said he would like to link up again with Barry Johnston.

McAllister recruited former Cliftonville midfielder Johnston as a player/coach capacity back in January.

"I loved working alongside Janty, and it would be great to continue that partnership somewhere else," McAllister said.

"We will wait and see what happens and what opportunities there are out there. But I will definitely be back."
