Pat Lam responds to Bristol Bears being linked with Gareth Anscombe, Danny Cipriani and Rhys Priestland

It's agent talk say Pat Lam.

In recent weeks Bristol Bears have been linked with four international standard fly-halves by the rugby rumour mill.

Amongst those connected to the club have been Gloucester's Danny Cipriani, Cardiff Blues and Wales' Gareth Anscombe, Bath's Rhys Priestland - who is likely to be lining up against the Bears this weekend in the The Clash, and Sale and USA number 10 AJ MacGinty.

Today, speaking ahead of facing Bath at Twickenham on Saturday, the Bristol head coach has set the record straight.

Lam said: “I’ve got three tens next year, why would I pay that amount of money for someone else?

Anscombe, who helped Wales win the 2019 Six Nations Grand Slam was the most recent to be linked for a fee in the region of £500,000 a season.

Lam currently has former Ireland international Ian Madigan, rising star Callum Sheedy and Tiff Eden signed up for the 2019/20 season.

Lam continued: "I think we’ve linked to McGinty, Priestland and Cipriani. It’s a great ploy by agents to boost their players – I wouldn’t be surprised to see Gareth Anscombe stay exactly where he is in Wales.

"I can tell you that now [he won’t be coming to Bristol]. Definitely.”

If Anscombe was to move away from Wales it would make the New Zealand born player eligible for selection for the national team as he falls considerably below the WRU's 60 cap qualifying exemption.

WRU policy states players who have 60 caps or more are able to leave Wales and still be available for selection - Anscombe has just 26 caps.
