Pat Howard quits Cricket Australia in wake of ball-tampering scandal

The fall-out from Australian cricket’s ball-tampering scandal claimed another scalp on Wednesday, with Pat Howard leaving his role as high-performance manager.

Howard had been due to keep the position until after next year’s Ashes tour of England but will be replaced by Australia women’s captain Belinda Clark in what CA described as “a new chapter”.

Steve Smith, who was captain at the time of the incident against South Africa in March, and vice-captain David Warner are still serving one-year bans, while Cameron Bancroft, who rubbed the ball with sandpaper, will return next month. The incident also led to the departures of coach Darren Lehmann and CA chief executive James Sutherland, while CA’s leadership was branded “arrogant and controlling” in a review into Australian cricket.

Last week, chairman David Peever and director Mark Taylor resigned after the review.

CA chief Kevin Roberts said: “Everyone at CA is focused on rebuilding and moving forward after what has been a turbulent year for Australian cricket.”
