Pat Finucane's brother targeted with 'explosive device'

A "crude explosive device" was left outside the home of Martin Finucane early this morning.

Sinn Fein has condemned those behind the "reckless attack" against the brother of murdered solicitor Pat Finucane.

A PSNI spokesperson said: "Police are currently in attendance at a security alert in the Glenties Drive area of west Belfast following the discovery of a suspicious object outside a house in the area.

"No homes have been evacuated at this time.

"There are no further details."

West Belfast MP Paul Maskey has condemned those responsible for the "crude explosive device" outside the home of justice and human rights campaigner Martin Finucane.

He said: "A crude explosive device has been left outside the West Belfast home of a brother of murdered solicitor Pat Finucane early this morning. This is wrong and I unreservedly condemn it.

Mr Maskey branded the incident as "reckless" and said it "shows a callous disregard for the Finucane family and the local community".

"This is an attack on a justice and human rights campaigner and as such is an attack on the whole community," he added.

“Those behind this device have nothing to offer society.

"I would call on anyone with any information on those responsible for this attack on a home to bring it forward to the police."

The SDLP has also hit out at the incident.

The party's West Belfast representative Paul Doherty said: "I unreservedly condemn this action. It is wrong and shows a reckless disregard for both the Finucane family and the wider community.

"Those responsible have nothing to offer this community. We are trying to build a better West Belfast and acts like this only make that harder. They have to be faced down.”

"I would appeal to anyone with information to bring it forward and offer my thoughts to Martin and the wider Finucane family."
