The holders went down only 1-0 in Guadalajara in the World Cup group stage, courtesy of two pieces of individual brilliance. Pele was already celebrating when Gordon Banks proved his reflexes to claw away his header, before England were caught on the counter but were saved by a perfect tackle by Bobby Moore on the advancing Jairzinho

England's first ever victory in Brazil is remembered as the occasion that saw one of the most magnificent individual goals ever scored by an Englishman. John Barnes dribbled past a host of defenders, before rounding the goalkeeper and passing the ball into the net. Mark Hateley got England's second on 65 minutes

Bebeto gave Brazil the lead midway through the first half before David Platt equalised after the break. Gary Lineker missed a penalty with the game goalless and didn't score again in his England career, meaning he retired one goal shy of Sir Bobby Charlton's record of 49

The only time, penalty shoot-outs aside, Terry Venables ever tasted defeat as England manager. Graeme Le Saux stunned a jubilant Wembley crowd on 39 minutes with a ferocious 25-yard volley but second half goals from Juninho and Edmundo, along with a first international goal for Ronaldo, gave the South American side the win

Defeat in Paris didn't prevent England winning the World Cup warm-up competition, Le Tournoi. Romario struck the winner after an hour for Brazil but victories over Italy and France meant England finished top of the group in the tournament that became famous for a wickedly curling free-kick by Roberto Carlos

England produced a polished performance at Wembley as they continued their preparations for the European Championships the following month. Michael Owen had given England the lead with a neat finish following good hold up play by Alan Shearer, before Franca headed the equaliser in first-half stoppage time

England bowed out at the quarter-final stage of the World Cup in Shizuoka after an ambitious Ronaldinho free-kick managed to elude David Seaman and float under the crossbar. Rivaldo had equalised on half-time to cancel out Michael Owen's opener which had given English fans hope of a famous victory

Diego headed an injury-time equaliser to deny England victory in their first game at the new Wembley. David Beckham was recalled by Steve McClaren and provided the assist for England's goal, sending over a deep free-kick which was powered in at the far post by captain John Terry
