Actor Jim Caviezel says that The Passion of the Christ sequel is moving forward, 16 years after the biblical drama was released.

The first film, which was produced, co-written and directed by actor Mel Gibson, told the story of the final 12 hours before Jesus’s death.

Now, the franchise looks set to return, with star Caviezel, confirming that the sequel, titled The Passion of the Christ: Resurrection, was still in the works.

“Mel Gibson just sent me the third picture, the third draft. It’s coming,” the actor, who played Jesus, told Breitbart.

“It’s called The Passion of the Christ: Resurrection. It’s going to be the biggest film in world history.”

The original Passion of the Christ film was a box office hit, making over £485m in global ticket sales. It holds records for being both the highest grossing Christian film of time and the highest grossing R-rated film in US history.

However, it polarised critics, with some arguing that the film was excessively violent, while others stated that it was antisemitic.

Gibson has been personally accused of antisemitism by Winona Ryder, who recently claimed that the actor once asked her at a party if she was an “oven dodger”. Gibson has denied the allegations.
