Passing, leadership and a big fan in Ole - What Nottingham Forest fans can expect from James Garner

Manchester United midfielder James Garner will spend the rest of the season on loan at Nottingham Forest.

Garner began the campaign on loan at Watford but his deal was cut short, prompting a move to the City Ground. Despite his switch to the Hornets failing to work out, the 19-year-old is seen as a prospect.

For more on what Forest fans can expect from Garner, we turned to the Manchester Evening News' Dominic Booth for some further insight.

What kind of midfielder is he?

Garner is a passing midfielder. He has been likened to Michael Carrick by United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, though in Under-23s football he has operated in deeper and advanced midfield positions.

He was a leader, and a regular captain, in youth football for United and has a wide range of skills but is particularly noted for his passing ability. He can certainly move the ball quickly and offers an energetic presence in the middle of the park.

Is he tough enough for the Championship?

Garner was rated enough by former Watford boss Vladimir Ivic to start regularly in the Championship and he will undoubtedly have grown a lot as a result of that loan at Vicarage Road.

The Championship seems like the perfect level for Garner at the moment and United hope that he's developing thanks to the first team exposure.

How highly do United rate him?

He is rated very highly by United, though all eyes will be on the next few months in terms of his long-term Old Trafford future.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in particular is a fan, so would love Garner to thrive at Forest.

What went wrong at Watford?

The change in management undoubtedly had a major impact on Garner.

As mentioned, he was a favourite under Ivic but new boss Xisco Munoz played Garner far less regularly — and he was competing with seasoned professionals like Tom Cleverley, Nathaniel Chalobah, Will Hughes and others for a spot in Watford's midfield.

It's not as if the loan spell was a dramatic failure, just that United want to maximise his playing time and hence have found him a new loan club.
