Passersby ring 999 after seeing flames billowing from Black Pearl wood hut

A fire broke out at the Black Pearl wood hut in New Brighton last night.

It is not yet known what caused the blaze but people in connection with the project said they were happy to have salvaged the wood used for projects like the beloved pirate ship and the Vale Park Fairy Village.

Witnesses who were taking a late stroll on the promenade said they saw smoke then flames reaching high into the trees of the Tower Grounds.

One eyewitness said: "I saw two lads running as the fire was getting quite big and when I rang the fire service they said there is already a call in.

"They were there so quick and got it under control in minutes. Well done to the firefighters."

A spokesperson for the Black Pearl Facebook page said they had been to inspect the hut following the fire.

They said: "Pleased to say no damage done to the wood for projects etc. The little hut is damaged but that is not a problem as we had planned to sort the wood and the hut out when lockdown is eased."

A spokesperson for Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service said: "Firefighters were called to Tower Promenade, New Brighton, on Tuesday, March 9.

"Crews were alerted at 8.41pm and on scene at 8.50pm. One fire engine attended.

"On arrival crews found a small collection of wood on fire opposite the pirate ship.

"Crews extinguished the fire using a hose reel jet. Fire crews left the scene at 8.59pm."

The Black Pearl first launched back in 2013 and has remained a much loved New Brighton treasure. Artist Frank Lund, who along with Major Mace first built the ship.

Sadly, last year, strong winds and huge waves smashed and sank what was left of the structure.

There are still many holding onto hopes of another Black Pearl once lockdown restrictions ease and the 'pirates' can regroup to rebuild.
