Passersby open driver's door and pull him out after he smashed into parked cars

A man has been arrested after three members of the public pulled him out of a car that crashed into a number of vehicles on a Trafford street.

Officers were called to Taylors Road, Stretford, shortly before 12.30pm today, August 30, after three men pulled the driver from a car that had allegedly hit several other vehicles along the street.

A 52-year-old man was arrested at the scene on suspicion of drink driving, and driving without a licence or insurance.

Local railway engineer Callum Dudley was walking down the street when he heard a massive bang.

The 27-year-old said: "I was out to just get a bit of fresh air and this car was coming from the other side then it's just made a right bang and I thought, 'that car's just gone into that other one, what do I do here?'.

"So I rang my mum and she told me to get a picture and then the car carried on but it kept stalling so I thought 'this is weird', either he can't drive or he's drunk.

"I was legging it down the street after him and he came to the bottom of the road and took the corner dead wide and nearly went into a guy loading his van and then nearly hit my dad's car.

"My mum had come out at this point and was shouting after him so I got alongside it and I was banging on the windows shouting for him to stop."

Callum then pulled the door open and started searching for a key to bring the car to a stop, but discovered the vehicle used keyless start.

He then decided to pull the man from the car, and two other men came over to help remove the driver and hold him until police arrived.

Callum added: "I just had to get him out the car and stop the car before it got any further.

"What would have happened if he got on the main road, or knocked a kid?

"I didn't have any choice, it was for his safety and our safety too.

"It could have been a lot worse if he'd gotten any further."

The man has been remanded in custody after allegedly providing positive breath samples.

A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Police said: "On Monday August 30 officers have arrested a 52 year old male on suspicion of driving a motor vehicle whilst over the prescribed alcohol limit, driving without a licence and driving without insurance.

"Shortly before 12:30 police were called to Taylors Road, Stretford to reports of a drink driver who had collided with a number of vehicles on the street and was being detained by members of the public.

"Officers from B relief Response Team and Traffic quickly attended and located the male who was subsequently arrested.

"The male will spend the remainder of his Bank Holiday Monday in custody where he has provided positive breath samples and will be charged when sober."
