Passengers with coronavirus symptoms 'should stay indoors immediately', Bristol Airport warns

Passengers returning from countries struck by the coronavirus outbreak "should stay indoors immediately" if they develop symptoms, Bristol Airport has warned.

Countries across the world are taking drastic measures to prevent further cases amid growing pandemic fears.

This includes in Italy, where an outbreak of the virus has hit two rural villages near Milan and Venice.

As a result, people flying to Bristol Airport from Milan have been met with Italian airport staff in masks, hand sanitiser at departure gates and temperature scans.

Tourists returning from countries with high levels of coronavirus have already been warned by Health Secretary Matt Hancock to "self-isolate" they show flu-like symptoms.

What is Coronavirus?

Bristol Airport has now issued similar advice to passengers returning from "infected areas", advising anyone with suspected symptoms to avoid contact with other people.

But a spokeswoman for Bristol Airport confirmed there is no requirement for additional checks for departing passengers at UK airports.

The spokeswoman said: "Strict procedures are already in place with airlines using Bristol Airport for customers arriving with infectious diseases.

"Airline and airport staff identifying suspected cases of communicable diseases, including coronavirus, activate a call out procedure to enable advice and assistance to be sought from the local health authority.

"If customers have returned from infected areas and develop symptoms, however mild, customers should stay indoors at home and avoid contact with other people immediately and call NHS 111."

What is the situation worldwide?

Around 1,000 people have been quarantined at a Tenerife hotel after an Italian tourist was tested positive for coronavirus.

The H10 Costa Adeje Palace hotel has been placed into lockdown, with police making sure no-one enters or leaves the site.

Meanwhile, the regions of Lombardy and Veneto in Italy have been badly hit, with several small towns in complete lockdown.

The vast majority of cases are in China, where the death roll has reached more than 2,600.

Global cases of the virus have now passed 80,000 and the World Health Organisation has warned countries to do more to prepare for a possible pandemic.

What are the symptoms?

Symptoms include fever and cough that can progress to severe pneumonia. This can cause shortness of breath and breathing difficulties.

The virus causes more severe symptoms in people with weakened immune systems, older people and those with long-term conditions like diabetes, cancer and chronic lung disease.
