Passengers 'vomiting and crying' as Dublin Airport flight tries to land four times and is forced to divert in Storm Ciara

Passengers on a flight from Dublin Airport were "vomiting and crying" as their plane attempted to land four times in Birmingham during Storm Ciara before being diverted.

Wales Rugby fan Jason Allen who flew to Ireland to watch his team's defeat against Ireland at the Aviva Stadium in Dublin on Saturday described it as the "worst flight of his life".

The 47-year-old said he was baffled the flight even took off in the first place with other flights going from the capital being cancelled.

After a memorable day out in the Irish capital, Jason and his pals had driven to Dublin Airport on Sunday morning fully expecting their Aer Lingus flight would be cancelled, reports Wales Online.

The horrific weather thanks to Storm Ciara had already seen several flights grounded but to their surprise, the plane carrying the group of Welsh friends left on time at 12.20pm.

Their relief turned to panic as severe turbulence took hold and the pilot struggled to land four times at Birmingham International, with the plane "shooting back up" in the wind.

The nightmare journey saw passengers vomiting and crying before the landing was abandoned.

"We were all happy to go home to be honest with you but if we knew now what we didn't know then I wouldn't have got on the plane," explained Jason, from Pontarddulais, Swansea.

"Taking off was a bit shaky because of the wind but the journey was fine but while we descended to go into Birmingham it was really shaky and as we were coming down the plane was shooting back up.

"People were being sick and quite a few people were crying and frightened because we were circling and dropping and experiencing full on turbulence.

"I was annoyed because the flight in front of us to Birmingham was cancelled so they knew what the weather was going to be like."

After a fourth attempt to land the plane failed, the decision was diverted to Liverpool and a bus was put on back to Birmingham.

Jason added: "We landed in Liverpool three hours after we took off and we were kept on the plane for an hour and had to wait another hour for a bus.

"When we got back to Birmingham we had to drive home. I was supposed to be home by 4pm but by the time I got home last night it was 11.30pm.

"It 100% put a dampener on the trip."

And later that night, a different Aer Lingus plane going from Birmingham to Dublin Airport was struck by lightning during the fierce storm.

Amazing footage shows the plane being hit by the massive bolt over Birmingham as it left the UK city's airport to go to Dublin.

Locals reported hearing a massive bang right before the bolt struck the flight.

The extraordinary incident was caught on CCTV by Daniel Pereira who jumped up from watching TV after seeing the huge flash through his blinds.

Aer Lingus confirmed it was one of their jets that was hit and assured everyone that it continued on to Dublin with no damage.

They said: "“Aer Lingus can confirm that on its departure from Birmingham Airport at 21:33, flight EI 277 to Dublin encountered lightning.

“The aircraft, which is designed to withstand regular weather occurrences, was not damaged and operated as normal to Dublin where it landed at 22:38.”
