Passengers trapped on 'sweltering' Ryanair flight for 12 hours furious as they're charged for water

Furious passengers have criticised Ryanair for charging them for food and water while stuck on a grounded plane for five hours.

Holidaymakers in Lanzarote found themselves stuck on board the "sweltering" Edinburgh-bound plane whilst temperatures outside reached as high as 30C.

During that delay they say they were made to pay €3 at time in order to keep hydrated.

Then, to add insult to injury, when the flight eventually took off it had to be diverted to Bordeaux, at which point cabin crew finally handed around free drinks, according to The Mirror .

However, that wasn't until a young mum on the flight had been taken ill and had to leave to aircraft to be assessed by waiting paramedics.

By the time the plane managed to reach its final destination in Scotland at 11.30pm on Friday those on board had been inside for almost half a day.

Passenger John Rafferty said: "The lady sitting next to us asked for water after we had been sitting on the plane in scorching heat for three hours. The stewardess said she wasn't authorised to give it out.

"A while later they started selling water and non-alcoholic drinks for €3. I had to pay €3 for water and €5.50 for a panini.

"It wasn't until we landed in Bordeaux nine hours later that we were offered free water.

"We understand that things sometimes happen but the way it was handled was so poorly."

Another passenger Julie McCann said: "We had asked for water but it was clear it was purchase only.

"A lot of people bought water, juice and food because we had been sitting for hours and were hungry and thirsty. I would have thought the airline would automatically provide water after three hours."

What are your rights if you flight is cancelled or delayed?

Ryanair said the reason for the delay in Spain was down to "adverse weather."

A spokesman said: "This flight from Lanzarote to Edinburgh (27 Sept) was regrettably delayed ahead of take-off due to adverse weather in Lanzarote, before departing to Edinburgh later that day.

"Ryanair sincerely apologised to customers for this delay, which was completely outside of our control."
