Passengers were left stranded after all Virgin Trains services were cancelled north of Stafford due to flooding.
The rail operator posted on Twitter pictures of the flooded lines between Lichfield Trent Valley and Manchester Piccadilly where floodwater submerges the tracks.
Concerned commuters left comments as they asked for travel updates, reported Manchester Evening News .
Virgin Trains tweeted at 9pm that all lines north of Stafford were blocked.
They said: "Customers are advised not to travel and a full refund can be claimed at point of purchase."
Another seven railway operators were also affected by the flooding, according to National Rail updates.
They are CrossCountry, East Midlands Railway, London Northwestern Railway, Merseyrail, Northern, TransPennine Express and Transport for Wales.
The disruption came after the Met Office issued a yellow weather warning for some parts of England and Wales.
It read: "Heavy rain has caused flooding on some lines and as a result of this, journeys are disrupted.
"Network Rail are on site at various locations monitoring the water levels.
"Where possible, pumps will be used to move the water away from the railways lines, however this has not been possible in some places as the surrounding areas are also flooded."
Scores of people took to Twitter to express their concern after they were stranded.
Twitter user PriceofFootball tweeted Virgin Trains to say: "We’ve been told to get off the train at Nuneaton heading north to Crewe due to the line flooding. Any suggestions as to what we should do next?"
While CarolGrahamPhoto wrote: "With respect, we were told the train was terminating at Preston (after the flooding). But we’re actually now stationary near #stafford.
"Is there a plan to get us to Glasgow? It’s my birthday and this wasn’t in my plans!! Very little information on train."
Greater Manchester, along with other parts of the UK, was hit by widespread flooding as heavy rain battered the area.
Cars tried to drive through deep water on some roads, while elsewhere there were reports of rivers bursting their banks.
Nine flood warnings were issued for the region, urging those living nearby to 'be prepared' and 'keep up to date' with their surroundings.
