Passengers share hilarious stories and strangest things they've seen on the Tyne and Wear Metro

From pony passengers, to rowdy ravers, the Metro has transported an array of quirky characters along the track since it began operating in 1980.

Over the weekend we shared this piece on a day in the life of the Tyne and Wear Metro.

ChronicleLive photographer Claire McKie-Reid spent the day capturing the lives of commuters, daytrippers and pets.

And over on our Facebook page, Metro users have been sharing some of their most memorable moments on board its carriages.

Lunch on the go

On a busy day around the city, it can be difficult to schedule in time for lunch.

Commuters will often see fellow passengers munching on a meal deal or snacking on a sausage roll.

However, Ray Sweeting from South Sheilds recalls a time he almost enjoyed a unique on board catering service.

He wrote: “Someone got on with a portable BBQ and then started cooking imaginary steaks. I was bit disappointed when the ticket inspectors got on and removed him from the train as I had just ordered a medium rib eye.”

Keeping the place tidy

With around 100,000 journeys taken on a commuter day, Metro carriages need to be cleaned on a regular basis.

Passenger Stephen Bryan remembers a journey when someone decided to give the cleaning staff a helping hand.

He wrote: “Someone got on the Metro with a hoover and started to hoover the carriage with a bottle of wine in the other hand.”

Taking a stand

“Once I saw a woman bring her own coffee table for the journey.” explains passenger Pete Law.

Perhaps Metro should consult this lady when they design their new fleet of trains which are expected to arrive from late 2021.

Stand clear of the doors

Metro’s “stand clear of the doors ” announcement aims to prevent anyone from trapping themselves or their belongings in the closing doors.

Although, when Andrew Smith said he found a ‘drunken’ lady arguing with her own reflection in the door, it leads us to question whether we’ve been misinterpreting the announcement all along.
