An investigation has been launched in the US by the Federal Aviation Administration after a flap on a Boeing 737’s wing partially broke off mid-flight in Texas on Tuesday.
Passengers on the Delta Air Lines Flight 1893 travelling from Orlando International to Austin-Bergstrom International Airport noticed a part of the wing came off the plane mid-flight.
Passenger Shanila Arif told CNN: “We felt it was bad turbulence. The plane was shaking.
“The lady in front of us opened the window and told us it is broken. I opened the window and got scared.”
Arif captured video of the broken flap dangling behind the wing, while feeling worried that the piece might break off and hit the aircraft, potentially causing a crash.
None of the 62 passengers and six crew members on board the plane were injured.
Delta has agreed to cooperate with the FAA investigation.
A spokesperson from Delta told the Standard: “After DL 1893 landed safely and without incident in Austin, it was observed that a portion of the left wing’s flap was not in place.
“The aircraft has been taken out of service for maintenance.
“We apologize to our customers for their experience as nothing is more important than the safety of our people and customers.”
