Passengers pray and swig whiskey as plane makes emergency landing

Passengers have been filmed praying and swigging whiskey after their plane was forced to make an emergency landing.

The Swift Air flight from Caracas in Venezuela to Miami suffered engine failure 30 minutes after taking off.

It was then forced to land at Las Americas International Airport in the Dominican Republic.

Footage from on board the plane has captured the moment holidaymakers held hands and began reciting a prayer.

Some passengers can be seen standing up as they encourage others to join in before a round of applause is heard.

Two men can also been seen drinking whiskey from a bottle.

The plane later landed without any issues at Santo Domingo on Monday.

According to reports, the WA1996 Boeing 737-400 flight arrived on American soil at 8.42pm.

It took seven hours and three minutes after the faults were repaired.

The Swift Air flight was operating the Dominican Republic to Miami leg of the flight as Venezuelan operator LASER Airlines is banned from serving the United States.

The Trump administration announced in May the suspension of commercial and cargo planes between the United States and Venezuela.

According to a statement in May from the Department of Homeland Security they said: "Conditions in Venezuela threaten the safety and security of passengers, aircraft, and crew traveling to or from that country."
