Passengers had a lucky escape after a train hit an 'object' on the line between Falkirk High and Croy stations.
The ScotRail service is believed to have collided with a piece of metal that had come loose from a bridge at Castlecary, which runs across the M80 motorway.
Engineers were alerted to the incident just after 6pm yesterday evening, Monday, August 2.
No injuries were reported.
The line was closed for around an hour, but opened a short time later.
In a statement, Network Rail said: "We're investigating reports of a train striking an obstruction on the line near Castlecary, between Falkirk High and Croy stations.
"Our engineers have removed the obstruction from the line and are now examining the area where the object was struck.
"The westbound line has now been reopened and we expect the eastbound line to follow shortly.
"Both lines through the Castlecary area have now fully reopened, thank you for your patience."
