Passengers evacuated as train catches fire on Glasgow to London line

A passenger train had to be evacuated this evening near Lockerbie after a small fire took hold of a wheel axel.

The incident occurred prior to 8pm this evening near to Douglas Bridge in the Dumfries and Galloway area.

Glasgow Live understands that it involved the 18.40 Avanti West Coast service from Glasgow Central to London Euston - which Avanti say was terminated at Lockerbie "due to a fault on the train".

Scottish Fire and Rescue Service confirm that three fire appliances were mobilised to the scene, and that the fire had been extinguished prior to the arrival of crews.

Thankfully, there were no casualties among the 14 passengers on board.

A Scottish Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: “We were alerted at 7.52pm on Tuesday, February 2 to reports that a small fire had taken hold of a train wheel axel.

"Operations Control mobilised three fire appliances to the scene, near to Douglas Bridge, Lockerbie in Dumfries and Galloway. The fire had been extinguished prior to the arrival of crews.

"There were no casualties amongst the 14 passengers on board and firefighters are now preparing to leave the scene.”
