Passengers file lawsuit after O'Hare plane fire

CHICAGO _ Eighteen people have filed a lawsuit against American Airlines, General Electric and Boeing after their plane caught fire as it was lifting off from O'Hare International Airport last month, according to a law firm representing them.

Twenty people suffered minor injuries on Oct. 28 when American Airlines Flight 383 to Miami experienced an apparent engine failure that led to a fire on the right side of the plane.

The lawsuit claims the engine was constructed from defective material, and that American Airlines employees were negligent during the evacuation of the airplane, according to a statement from the Wisner law firm based in Geneva.

The statement did not say what damages were being sought.
