Passengers fall victim to 'juice jacking' scam targeting airport charging stations

Using an airport phone charging station can put your private data at risk because hackers can harvest your personal details in a worrying new scam called "juice jacking."

US law enforcement agencies say the sting involves criminals loading malware onto charging stations or cables they leave at the kiosk, reports the DailyStarOnline .

“Once the unsuspecting user plugs in, their phone or electronic device becomes infected," said Luke Sisak, a deputy district attorney in Los Angeles, spoke about the scam in a recent video.

“Within minutes of being plugged in, the malware could lock the device.

“Or send information like passwords, addresses, or even a full back-up of the phone directly to the criminal.”

He added: “When you’re out and about, you may have seen a public USB station at an airport or shopping centre.

“But be warned, a free charge could end up draining your bank account."

To avoid falling victim to this scam, it is recommended that travellers carry a portable charger.

This allows you to give your phone more juice wherever you are.

It also reduces the need to rely on public plug points.
